What is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation is various types of medication that allows patients to stay relaxed and/or sleep during dental procedures. It is commonly referred to sleep dentistry, although patients remain awake and conscious. Sedation helps patients relax to be more comfortable with the procedure and it encourages those with anxiety problems to see a dentist rather than putting it off. It is a customized solution for patients who fear the dentist, have high sensitivity or for those with longer procedures. It works well for those with low pain tolerance or who are special needs patients. Older people diagnosed with diseases like Alzheimer’s benefit from it.

Types of Sedation

If you have special needs or complicated treatment, we offer different kinds of sedation which include:
Nitrous Oxide Sedation

Called “laughing gas”, nitrous sedation is a simple, safe solution for children and adults. It is given through a mask and you will come out of it once you start breathing room air. It has a short-term effect for the rest of your day.

Oral Sedation

Oral Sedation is administered with a pill you take prior to arriving at the office. It allows you to stay awake and take with staff but you will be highly relaxed. You will need someone to drive you home.

Intravenous (IV) Sedation

IV Sedation provides a deeper level of sedation as it puts you in a twilight sleep. You may even dose off. You will have no memory of the procedure. You will need someone to take you home and remain for a while for you to recover.

The Sedation Process Step by Step

We want to be sure you understand what will happen during sedation and afterward. Below are the steps.

We use this time to go through your concerns, and health history. This will help us decide if sedation will be a good choice.

We recommend the type of sedation that we feel is best in your situation. The recommendation depends on your health, medications, and the type of procedure scheduled. We also provide you with detail instructions on how to prepare for the type of sedation selected.

The Sedation Appointment

We give you the sedation well before the procedure and monitor your vital signs and comfort level throughout the procedure.

Post-Procedure Care

You will be given aftercare instructions before you leave. We will give them to the person assisting you.
