Implant-Supported Dentures
Implant-Supported Dentures to Restore Your Smile
Implant-supported dentures are a tooth-replacement option that provides greater stability than traditional removable dentures. By attaching dentures to dental implants placed in the jawbone, this treatment may help improve the function and fit of replacement teeth.
At Water’s Edge Dental, our team carefully evaluates each patient to determine whether implant-supported dentures are an appropriate treatment option. During your consultation, we will review your oral health and discuss available solutions for replacing missing teeth.
What Are Implant-Supported Dentures?
Implant-supported dentures are dentures that attach to dental implants placed in the jawbone. The implants act as anchors that help support the denture.
Traditional dentures rest on the gums and may require adhesives to remain stable. Implant-supported dentures connect to implants using specialized attachments, which can help improve retention and comfort.
This treatment may be recommended for patients who are missing most or all of their upper or lower teeth and have sufficient jawbone to support implants.
Potential Benefits of Implant-Supported Dentures
Implant-supported dentures may offer several advantages over traditional removable dentures.

Improved Stability
Dental implants help support the denture, which may reduce movement while speaking or eating.

Enhanced Comfort
Because the denture is supported by implants, some patients find the restoration feels more secure than traditional dentures.

Improved Chewing Ability
Implant-supported dentures may allow patients to chew more comfortably than traditional removable dentures.

Support for Jawbone Health
Dental implants stimulate the jawbone through chewing forces, which may help support bone structure after tooth loss.

Improved Confidence
A more stable denture may help some patients feel more comfortable when speaking or smiling.
The Implant-Supported Denture Process
Our team educates you about your oral health, answers all your questions, and helps you move through the process of getting implant-supported dentures without worry. Below are the steps in the process.

Consultation and Treatment Planning
Your dentist will perform a comprehensive examination and may use 3D imaging (CBCT scans) to evaluate jawbone health and determine whether dental implants are appropriate.

Implant Placement
Small titanium implants are surgically placed into the jawbone. Local anesthesia is typically used during the procedure, and sedation options may be discussed when appropriate.

Healing and Osseointegration
Over several months, the implants integrate with the surrounding bone in a process called osseointegration. During this time, temporary dentures may be used.

Denture Attachment
Once healing is complete, connectors called abutments are attached to the implants. The custom denture is then secured to these attachments.
Implant-Supported Dentures vs. All-on-4®

Implant-Supported Dentures Often removable and attach to implants using connectors.

All-on-4®: Typically a fixed restoration attached permanently to four implants.
Both implant-supported dentures and All-on-4® treatments use dental implants to support replacement teeth, but the restorations function differently.
