Explain more about gum surgery in Toronto

Gum surgery (also called periodontal surgery) can include various dental procedures that remedies gum disease and other issues. It is a way to address periodontitis, also call advanced gum disease. Gum surgery is used only when other treatments fail. It rids gums of bacteria and tartar and helps periodontal pockets heal. It can also help regain lost bone and tissue and helps you keep your teeth.

Why Is Gum Surgery Necessary?

Healthy gums are the foundation of your smile. Gum disease threatens your oral health and can lead to tooth loss and a decline of your overall health. It can stabilize your health and improve your quality of life by reducing pain and ongoing dental problems. Below are some of the reasons why gum surgery may be considered.
Treating Advanced Gum Disease

Advanced gum disease requires drastic actions and gum surgery will remove hardened tartar and bacteria that can’t be effectively removed in cleanings.

Reducing Periodontal Pockets

Gum disease creates pockets where bacteria live. Gums pull away from the teeth to form these pockets. Surgery reduces the pockets, reducing bacteria buildup.

Restoring Bone and Tissue Loss

Periodontitis will destroy your connective tissue and bone. Surgery can remedy that.

Prevents Tooth Loss

Gum surgery is typically the last option to stop gum disease, restore oral health, and prevent tooth loss.

Diminishes Tooth Sensitivity

Tooth sensitivity decreases when gums heal.

Creates an Attractive Smile

Gum health leads to healthier teeth and that makes your smile more beautiful.

Gum Surgery Standards

Different types of gum surgeries are available at Water’s Edge. The one that works for you depends on your condition. We will review them with you.
Pocket Reduction Surgery

This surgery is one of the most common gum surgeries. The oral surgeon will make some incisions to expose toot to remove tater and bacteria. They reshape the bone and smooth out areas so bacteria have no room to grow. The gums are sewn to fit snugly around the bone.

Gum Grafting

Gum grafting is sometimes called soft tissue grafting. It addresses gums that pull away from teeth, leaving them vulnerable to infection. In this procedure, the oral surgeon replaces missing gum tissue with tissue that covers the tooth root and lower surface. The new tissue minimalizes tooth sensitivity. The surgeon usually gets the soft tissue from the roof of your mouth but it can be obtained in a couple of other places.

Bone Grafting

Significant bone loss requires grafting. Many times, this is required before other procedures like dental implants can be done. A bone graft is inserting bone grafting material into where there is bone loss. This can be done during a tooth extraction.
